Featuring a full port of the super-widescreen 32:9 arcade version of Dariusburst Another Chronicle EX - including its 3,000+ stage “Chronicle Mode”, which is communally unlocked by players from all over the world - as well as an all-original 200+ stage “Chronicle Saviours” (usually shortened to just “CS”) mode designed specifically for 16:9 displays and a single player, Dariusburst Chronicle Saviours most certainly isn’t a game you can accuse of being “over in 20 minutes”. This is one criticism that most certainly cannot be levelled at Dariusburst Chronicle Saviours, the most recent installment in the long-running shmup series. ![]() It’s a game that isn’t afraid to slap you about a bit, but also a good place to familiarise yourself with some conventions of the genre.Īnd, well, it’s just a really good game to boot, too.Ĭontinue reading Shmup Essentials: Gundemonium Recollection → bullet hell danmaku doujin Gundemonium Gundemonium Collection Gundemonium Recollection indie PC Platine Dispositif PlayStation 3 PS3 review Rockin' Android shmup Steam WindowsĪ common criticism of arcade-style shoot ’em ups by people who don’t understand that the main “point” of them is to replay them over and over for high scores is that they’re “too short” or “don’t have enough content”. One such example of a danmaku shmup that is both accepting to genre newcomers and monstrously challenging to veterans is Gundemonium Recollection from Japanese doujin circle Platine Dispositif, originally localised for PS3 and PC by Rockin’ Android. But you might be surprised at quite how approachable some of them are. Notorious for their screen-filling bullet patterns that seemingly demand superhuman reflexes to navigate, bullet hell (or, to give them their more “proper” name, danmaku) shoot ’em ups are a frightening prospect to get involved with. But beneath the neon colours, chaotic visual effects and questionable artwork, there’s a surprisingly solid shoot ’em up that has clearly been designed with some care and attention.Ĭontinue reading Shmup Essentials: Deep Space Waifu → 80s arcade Deep Space Waifu indie King Bear Linux Mac Neko Climax Studios neon PC retro shmup shoot 'em up Steam strip 'em upĪny self-respecting gamer knows that if you really want to impress someone with your dexterity and prowess, you don’t fire up a Souls game, you fire up a bullet hell shmup. But the fact is, this rough-around-the-edges, budget-price affair is actually well worth your time and attention.ĭeveloped by the mysterious “Neko Climax Studios”, whose only online presence appears to be a Facebook page under the ID and whose credits consist entirely of initials, Deep Space Waifu describes itself as a “casual strip ’em up action game, full of colours and girls”. It may seem faintly sacrilegious to include a game like Deep Space Waifu in the same column as legends such as Thunder Force II, Raiden IV and Dariusburst Chronicle Saviours. Which is how we now find ourselves, two years after its original Dreamcast release, with an HD version of Hucast’s shmup Ghost Blade for Windows PC, PS4, Wii U and Xbox One.Ĭontinue reading Shmup Essentials: Ghost Blade HD → 2dream ghost blade ghost blade hd hucast games PC PlayStation 4 PS4 shmup shoot 'em up Steam STG Wii U Xbox One ![]() Those with a longstanding interest in the worldwide shoot ’em up scene may well be familiar with German developer Hucast Games.Ī developer primarily known for helping resurrect Sega’s defunct Dreamcast platform for modern audiences through the release of original, new arcade-style games for the system, Hucast’s work has had mixed reception over the years - though not necessarily entirely due to the quality of the games themselves, as this article from Segabits in 2015 explains in more detail.Īs we move further into the “digital age”, however, it becomes a lot easier for developers such as Hucast to ply their trade - and, should mistakes occur, to correct them. ![]()
